Giving Back with Jimmy McCormack

This week, we’re delighted to introduce Jimmy McCormack, a valued member of the Jersey Cheshire Home Foundation Committee, whose passion for community, financial expertise and down-to-earth approach help strengthen the Jersey Cheshire Home’s continued success.

Why I joined the Foundation Committee

“I’ve always been a big advocate for giving my time to community causes, whether sporting clubs, cultural societies, work forums, or charitable organisations. It’s something I picked up from my parents.

When Donna Abel, CEO of Jersey Cheshire Home, invited me for a coffee to discuss joining the Foundation Committee, I was honoured that she thought of me. I’ll admit, I hadn’t realised the full extent of the incredible work that goes on at the Home. That day, Donna spoke passionately about her team, the services they provide and the impact they have on residents’ lives. She shared her vision for the future and how I could play a small role in helping to shape that. I didn’t need to be asked twice—I was in!”

My background and what I bring to the role

“I came to Jersey in 1998 and since then, I’ve always been involved in community life. I’ve volunteered as Treasurer for the Irish Society and the GAA Club, coached kids’ football, and sat on the Board of Jersey Advisory & Conciliation Service.

I’m a Chartered Management Accountant and have worked in both financial and commercial sectors in roles ranging from Management Accountant to Finance Director and everything in between. I bring a wealth of practical and operational experience, and I really enjoy helping others develop and achieve their full potential.”

What makes Jersey Cheshire Home unique

“In a word the staff (yes, that’s two words!). They genuinely care and show incredible compassion toward the residents. They face challenges with humour and heart, creating a positive atmosphere that lifts everyone. The leadership team is always looking for ways to improve the Home’s environment and facilities, the status quo is never an option here.”

Proud moments

“I’m still a relative newcomer, but in the past year we’ve introduced new processes and controls in the Finance Department and have improved the reporting we provide to the Committee. Most of the credit goes to the Finance and Administration Manager and her team, I’ve just been a sounding board, but it’s been fantastic to see her development and deliver these improvements.”

What I’ve learned

“The most striking thing I’ve learned is the scale of what it takes to keep the Home running, it costs £8,500 every day. Seeing that figure in black and white really brings the challenge to life. I also learned that the average resident stays for 15 years, which shows just how important the Home’s role is in our community. Very few organisations can say the same.”

Encouraging others to get involved

“Everyone should support a charity or good cause in some way, your time or funds make a real difference, and it feels good to give back. As for why Jersey Cheshire Home? We truly need as much help as possible. Whether volunteering your time to help residents or supporting us financially to close our funding gap, every contribution counts.

We often say we’re Jersey’s best-kept secret—and we’d love to change that!”

We’re incredibly grateful to Jimmy McCormack for his commitment, insight and support. His energy and expertise help ensure Jersey Cheshire Home continues to grow, adapt and provide exceptional care for adults with disabilities in the island.
