Jersey Cheshire Home launches Wheelchair Art for Awareness Initiative

Jersey Cheshire Home, the island’s only residential facility supporting adult islanders with disabilities, is calling for schools and community groups to unleash their creativity this summer.

The innovative challenge, for which imagination is the only limit, is to select a theme that aligns with disability awareness, empowerment and inclusion, such as ‘Breaking Barriers’, ‘Unlimited Possibilities’ or perhaps ‘Colours of Inclusion’ and then to design and decorate a wheelchair based on this.

Participants can use lights, flowers, recycled goods or anything that transforms the chair into a remarkable piece of art.

Respecting the dignity of wheelchair users and promoting positive messages is paramount.

Schools and community groups simply need to get in touch with the Home and wheelchairs will be delivered on a first come first served basis after which decorating can commence!

The competition will culminate during National Inclusion Week, 23rd – 29th September 2024.

A panel of judges, including representatives from Jersey Cheshire Home, local artists and community leaders, will evaluate the decorated wheelchairs based on creativity, theme, and overall impact. Prizes and certificates will be awarded in categories including; Best Artistic Expression, Most Inspirational and People’s Choice.

The decorated wheelchairs will then be showcased at prominent various venues across the island.

Discussing the initiative Donna Abel, CEO of Jersey Cheshire Home said,

“We are excited to launch the Wheelchair Art for Awareness Initiative, this project not only highlights the creativity and spirit of our community but also underscores the importance of inclusivity and disability awareness. We invite everyone to join us in this inspiring journey and make a positive impact.”

“By participating in this initiative, you will not only elevate awareness of disabilities but also contribute to a memorable and impactful event that promotes creativity, empathy and community involvement.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the Wheelchair Art for Awareness project should contact John Garatsa Wellness Centre Manager at Jersey Cheshire Home at john.garatsa@jch.je or 01534 285858.
