Celebrating Creativity with Jacqueline Rutter

This month, we’re delighted to introduce Jacqueline Rutter, one of our wonderful volunteers who brings colour, creativity and connection to life at Jersey Cheshire Home through inspiring art sessions with our residents.

How it all began

“Originally, I was approached as Jersey Cheshire Home were collaborating with another charity; ArtHouse Jersey, with the idea to run a series of art workshops as an activity for residents. As we know art can be profoundly beneficial for people with disabilities.

At the time, I didn’t know much about the Home, but I quickly came to appreciate the individuality of care, the professionalism and the genuine ‘home from home’ feel.”

Bringing creativity to the Home

As an artist, curator and arts educator, Jacqueline has worked in Jersey schools for over 20 years and has partnered with Jersey Education and Art House Jersey on many creative projects.

“My volunteer role is all about engaging residents through creativity, making space for expression, connection and joy through art.”

What she loves most

“That’s an easy one, the people. I love the interaction with the residents, staff, families, and fellow volunteers.”

A memorable moment

“One moment that really stayed with me was working with a gentleman who had limited mobility. Watching the joy on his face as he painted simple lines and squares, he didn’t want to stop making marks. It reminded me how powerful small, simple interactions can be.”

What makes Jersey Cheshire Home special?

“The people make it special. Everyone here is unique, full of knowledge and incredible memories. It’s a privilege to be part of Jersey Cheshire Home. The spirit of care that inspired the original Cheshire Homes is very much alive here in Jersey.”

Personal impact

“At 64, I find volunteering here humbling. One day, this could be my future too and I couldn’t imagine a better place to recover and adapt to life’s changes.”

Advice for new volunteers

“Be adaptable, it’s someone else’s home, so go at their pace. Celebrate the residents’ superpowers, every one of them has one. And most importantly, have fun, enjoy the moment and share the laughter.”

We’re so thankful to Jacqueline for the energy, creativity and care she brings to Jersey Cheshire Home. Volunteers like Jacqueline help us make every day brighter.
